Americans are approaching 2014 with a positive financial outlook. According to the latest COUNTRY Financial Security Index®, nearly 1 in 3 think 2014 will be better for them financially than 2013. That’s the most optimistic Americans have been about the year ahead since December 2007, when 42 percent responded positively.

Americans who expect a better financial future around the corner say they’re banking on increased income expectations more than anything. As for the 25 percent of Americans who feel 2014 will be worse for them financially, most say a worsening economy will be to blame.

Here’s more on what Americans are saying about their finances in 2014:

A Year in Review

Since 2007, Americans have gradually become more optimistic about their financial security when asked about the year ahead. However, over the course of this past year alone, Americans’ financial security sentiments have been almost at a standstill, with the exception of their ability to save. This month, 48 percent were able to set aside money for savings, down four points from June and marking the first reading below 50 percent since December 2011.

With the holiday season in full swing, maybe the drop in savings is more about timing than anything else. As for the fairly consistent financial security sentiments overall, this may be a sign that Americans have settled into the new economic reality.
